Matagi
Meet Matagi: The Spirit of the Mountain Winds
Once known as "Goldy," this stunning stallion’s golden coat was a sight to behold, but we always knew he needed a name that truly resonated with his spirit. After much thought and reflection, we have chosen a name that embodies his essence, a name that carries the strength, beauty, and wildness of the mountains he calls home.
We proudly introduce you to Matagi.
In Japanese culture, Matagi refers to the "Spiritual Hunters of Japan’s Snowy Mountains," a title reserved for those who live in harmony with the land, respecting and balancing the delicate ecosystem of their rugged environment. Much like these revered hunters, our Matagi embodies a deep connection to his mountainous home, moving with the wind, elusive and free, yet always in tune with the rhythms of nature.
In Fijian, Matagi means "strong wind," a fitting tribute to his powerful, untamed spirit. He is the wind that whispers through the valleys, the force that commands respect, and the presence that cannot be captured or tamed.
Today, capturing Matagi in photographs was like chasing the wind itself. Ian Brown braved the challenging terrain—up and down several steep hills and even through a creek too wide to jump—all to capture the essence of this magnificent stallion. The journey was a testament to Matagi's elusive nature and the wild spirit that defines him.
Matagi is more than just a name—it is a reflection of who he is, a wild stallion who lives with reverence for the mountains and embodies the strength and freedom of the wind. His new name is perfect, connecting him to the very essence of the wild places he roams, and we couldn’t be more honoured to share it with you.
